Summer Knitting Series: Knit a Sunhat!

OK, so I'm SUPER proud of this one because not only is it a PERFECT summer knitting project but I designed this baby all by my self! I drew up a theory, tested it out and dang if it didn't come out super duper!
I've been knitting these right and left. I made one for my 18 month old, one for my two year old nephew, and two for my cousin's kids. As you can see it the picture above, Avi is really enjoying it!

Supplies:

One skein of 100% cotton yarn. Cotton is important so it wont be too hot!
Size 7 circular neeldes

Directions for a newborn size (and a toddler size)
Cast on100 stitches (190)
Knit, join together, mark the beginning, and be careful not to twist
Knit 5 rows in garter stitch
Begin knitting in stockinette stitch and continue until piece measures 1.5 inches (2 inches)
Purl one row (on a row that should have been knitted so to create a seam)
Ktog every stitch on the next row
Stockinette for 1.5 (2) inches
Knit 6 stitches, place a marker on your needles and then place a marker on every 8 stitches
Knit a row and K2tog two stitches before the markers
Purl a row
Repeat the last two rows until you are down to 24 stitches
K1, K2tog, repeat to end
K2tog 4 times
Cut a long tail and using a needle gather up remain stitches and tie off

Using a long piece of yarn and a darning needle sew the yarn into the seam you created by purling, pull it through slightly tighter than the hat and tying it off, this makes the hat buckle in after the brim and this makes the brim stand out a bit over the face.

Sewing straps:

Cast on 80 stitches
knit one row while also binding that row off

do this twice and sew the straps to the under side of the hat on the sides.

Enjoy!

Summer Knitting Series: Knit a Tie!

My father's day tie I knit for my Dad

If you're like me you love to have a project going on your needles. In these hot days of summer though it takes some effort to get excited about knitting since so many knitting projects are winter fare. Knitting a sweater, pool side, somehow just doesn't have the charm you want to feel from this ancient, sacred art.

So, here at Wise and Glorious Purpose we will be regularly updating items for your summer knitting projects in our Summer Knitting Series! So get out those needles, warm up those wrists and drive into some summer knitting fun!

Today's knitting project is: Knit a Necktie!

A knitted tie is super quick and easy knitting project. I'm thinking about making matching ties for the boys for church. Lots of patterns are available online. Here's some links to get you started :)

This is the pattern I used. I used stripping sock yarn instead of white.

This one is a little more fanciful.

Happy knitting! :)

Waldorf Toys for Boys - Peg People Action Figures!

Sometimes we Waldorf mommas can have a hard time getting our boys to give up mainstream toys in favor of Waldorf inspired play. I'm always looking for a compromise, something my son will play with, that reflects his interest but which also is true to the Waldorf standard of natural materials and imaginative play. In that theme, here are the action figures I made for my son's 8th birthday.

Using some peg people I purchased at Etsy.com and some beeswax crayons
I created this Doctor Who group. From left to right they are a Cyberman, a Dalik,
Amy Pond, Doctor Who (the 11th), Rory and another Dalik.

This is the crew of SG-1 from Stargate along with a few Jafa friends.
Daniel Jackson still had a wet spot on his forehead LOL
The creations you can make are endless, superheros, Bible heroes, characters from favorite books, movies, comic books, friends, relatives - whatever you can dream up!

Happy crafting!
