Urnaigh an Tighearna

The Lord's prayer, so beautiful, so comforting....

Starting this Monday and over the next six weeks until Saint Patrick's Day my family and I will be memorizing the Lord's prayer in Gaelic! Wont you join us? It's going to be so fun!

Ready? Get set. Here ya go...

Ar n-Athair a tha air nèamh, gu naomhaichear d'ainm.
Thigeadh do rìochachd. Dèanar do thoil air an talamh, mar a nìthear air nèamh.
Tabhair dhuinn an-diugh ar n-aran làitheil. Agus maith dhuinn ar fiachan, amhail a mhaitheas sinne dar luchd-fiach.
Agus na leig ann am buaireadh sinn; ach saor sinn o olc;
oir is leatsa an rìoghachd, agus an cumhachd, agus a' ghlòir, gu sìorraidh.
Amen.

Ok, a bit overwhelming I know!

Let's break it down phonetically and verse by verse for each of the next six weeks.

Week one

  arr NAH-hr uh thah air NEE-uv, guh NOO-veech-ehr DAH-nyim.

Week two

  HIK-ug daw REE-awchk. JEE-ah-nuh-r daw hawl air un TAH-luv, marr uh NEE-ehr air NEE-uv.

Week three

 TARR GHOO-een un-DJOO arr NAH-run LAH-yel

Week four

Candlemas is Coming!

The days are dark but growing lighter as the sunrises I see from my bedroom window each morning -waking me with goldenrod, periwinkle and honeysuckle - come a little earlier each day.

February 2 is Candlemas

also known as Imbolc,
                                   Imbolg,
Bridig, Brigit, and the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple.

Originally this holiday was of mostly Celtic and northern European origins. This was the time of year when the milk began flowing again after the birth of the baby goats. It was a time when the light was growing stronger and we celebrated the waxing sun as the light of spring becomes visible through the chill of winter.

In Ireland they celebrate Saint Brigid, the midwife and foster mother of Jesus Christ at this time of year. In the Eastern Orthodox Church this holiday is known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. In the gospel of Luke, chapter two we read the story of Joseph and Mary presenting the baby Jesus at the Temple 40 days after his birth, which was the custom at the time.

They offered two turtle doves and two young pigeons for a sacrifice. Simeon, the Righteous, assesses baby Jesus at this time and prophesieds of the redemption of the world brought forth by Christ. A prophetess named Anna also makes similar prophesies.

Saint Brigid became associated with this holiday when Christianity reached Ireland. Saint Brigid was the daughter of a pagan chief. She grew up to become one of the only female Bishops (or Abesses) of the early church.

She is called Brigid, Brigit, Bride,
                                            Abbess of Kildare,
                                                                midwife of Christ,
Mary of the Gael and Noamh Brid.

She founded a school for art and metal work during her life. She was tied into this holiday as the midwife of Jesus and foster mother of our Lord.

Her sacred flame is still tended in Kildare to this day.

Candlemas is a time of many things and can be celebrated many ways. It is a time when the ground is awakening after it's long winter's nap. It is a time of purification and renewal. Some people remove their Christmas decorations this day. Fire, candle making, sacred flames, bowls of fresh cream and milk, colors of red and orange as well as Brigid dolls made from straw are all festive and traditional ways to mark this day.

Here are some ideas of ways to celebrate this day.

                                                                  A visit to the Temple

Since Saint Brigid is associated with art we often do a  lot of painting on this day. Here are our fire paintings done with tumeric and red food coloring.

Here Nykki paints with the juice of a blood orange

Baby Ronan paints on his first Candlemas

We used our fire paintings to add quotes from Luke 2 to our nature table

She's not made of straw but here's a picture of a Brigid doll we made a few years back.

Creating center pieces with candles and herbs

Our Candlemas center piece from three years ago. We collected all our candles we have used this year and bunched them together. The small white one in the middle was the vigil candle we got at Winter Solstice at the Spiral Dance. The flame we used to light it had come from Saint Brigid's sacred flame in Kildare!

Scriptures to ponder...

"... a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people of Israel." Luke 2:32

"The thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." Luke 2:35

"...and the child grew, and waxed strong in the spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him." Luke 2:40

Blessed Candlemas!

Winter Work

Our little Sprite Boy was ready for his own bed in big brothers' room, so Papa built him his own little bed! What a marvelous way to start life as a three-year-old!

Celtic cross I've been working on

One of my FAVORITE Thrift Shop finds of ALL TIME. Found last week this is a 1949 guide to sewing clothes and mending garments by hand! I love sewing and I prefer to sew by hand instead of on a machine but I only know a few stitches, I can't wait to get going on some new, fun projects!

She Looks Out...

She looks out on her brothers

They are frolicking in the winter California sunshine

She loooooongs to be close, can't wait to feel her legs run beneath her, once she has the hang of it

So happy and anxious to be earth-side

New Years Resolutions

"And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;" Colossians 3:23

I never much cared for New Year's resolutions for much of my life. I always thought that if you wanted to change something or start something that you shouldn't wait until New Year's - you should just change it or start right away

Then I grew older and wiser- tee hee. Now the years fly by like weeks and I figure why not make a New Year's resolution or two, it will be a new year before you know it!

I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do this year. And then it dawned on me. I do too much! Why add to it? I thought maybe I should commit to read some Jane Austen everyday - but exactly where am I going to fit that into my schedule?

So I decided to make resolutions that are something I'm NOT going to do anymore.

So without further ado, here is what I'm NOT doing anymore (hopefully LOL)...

1. No yelling

"A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" Proverbs 15:1 ESV

I gave up yelling last year for lent. I didn't yell across the house, I didn't yell up stairs, I didn't yell when I was mad. If something was important then I would get up and walk across the house instead of yelling. It kept me calmer. It took a while after lent for me to get into the habit of yelling again but here it is nearly a year later and I'm back in the habit....so, no yelling for me anymore, period. Hopefully this new resolve will finally make this a character trait of mine. A habit that I need not even think about. Wish me luck!

2. No scrolling through facebook when my children are up

"How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?" Proverbs 6:9

I know that what we say to our children is drowned out by our loud actions. I may tell them facebook is a waste of time but when I sit down and check my newsfeed every chance that I get I doubt that they are really getting the message. So, I may check my facebook after the boys are in bed or if they are out with their Papa but other then that I'm setting a good example.

3. No reading mainstream news

"And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone..." 2 Timothy 2:24 ESV

I have a news reading habit. I LOVE reading about politics, social wars and gossip. I get myself all worked up and polarized. Most, I get over opinionated. So no more Google News, no more Huffington Post. When I get the urge to read I will read Life Site News or one of my favorite blogs like Bending Birches or A Holy Experience.

What are you NOT doing this year?

Winter days at our home...

Outside things feel sharper, stiffer. The road winding down the steep mountain side sometimes looks too good in it's shinny black gloss of ice and turns must be taken slowly....everything moving slowly after the hussle of holidays ho ho ho-ed by...

Gifts of grandparent's presence means more than presents.

And every few days California yields up just enough sun to barely feel like running and playing - just a tip of spring thoughts on your tongue and you gobble up that small morsel of fun at the park.

Most days are found tucked in cozy with good, old reads like our scriptures which never sound better than when read from the mouths of babes, babes who will soon be taking the reins of their own life over and you purse your lips tight and ring your hands and pray that they are following your lead...

And then you look down and see the very littlest one trying to keep up with big brothers, eyes blue and round and your struck at how your body produced such a jewel.

Christmas gifts well tested out, paint to paper, awwwwww....

And the Prophets tell us, as God once was so is man and we little Gods-in-embryo play at creation.

Dividing with remainders and using our fractions...

...but oh, the feeling of paint.

One afternoon mom gets the idea to use best-friend-now-past-through-the-veil's shirts to create a doll,

and the little ones rejoice.

Just in time for two little boys, and two little birthdays.

Happy 2013!
